Depression is a common disorder characterized by sadness, loss of inspiration or loss of pleasure. It is often accompanied by feelings of guilt, low self-esteem and may include disturbed sleep, loss of appetite, low energy and poor concentration. One of five people suffer with some form of depression and over one million people a year globally, take their lives. This translates to one person every forty seconds, one person every forty seconds!
Do you know; One in Five students struggle with some form of depression and twenty percent of the students with depression attempt suicide? According to the AAS (American Association of Suicidology) every two hours someone under the age of 25 completes suicide. What a waste of our greatest talent, our students. It is time for change.
Here is some food for thought. If depression is so prevalent why are so many ashamed to talk openly about it? Are you going to ruin the party? Why can't we all, especially students, stand up and say no more!
Many forms of depression occur in every family at some point. Yet most who struggle with this challenge don't talk to their own families about how they feel. Ever stop to think why that is? Why are we ashamed of something that so many of us deal with every day? Is someone somehow better because they don't share their true feelings? Is someone really a friend if they judge you?
It is amazing to learn some of world's greatest minds have struggled with all form of depression such as Abraham Lincoln, Sir Isaac Newton, Thomas Edison, Vincent Van Gogh, Alexander McQueen and musical greats like Eric Clapton, Elton John and Beethoven. The list goes on to include actors, poets and a long list of comedians. One would think to be put on a list with some of the great minds and talents of our time should be viewed as a badge of courage not something to be ashamed of.
Depression is a treatable. Shake it up and make the changes you hope someone else would make. Be socially responsible. We know what needs to be done and we know how to do it. Be a good friend and a better family member. If we act boldly enough, our actions will offer many accomplishments. Rock the Eclipse. Inspire change.
